Sew what you want to say

Quiltabet is a complete alphabet - every letter, with variations where it matters, plus numbers, and punctuation.

There's even a heart block, for anyone who wants their exclamation marks and dotted 'i's to have a little more feeling.

Quiltabet is a modular system - a grid-based logic, built strip by strip, letter by letter - which means you're not making a quilt so much as building a vocabulary in fabric.

A few letters might make a name. A few more make a phrase. However far you want to take it, the system holds.

The pattern/system comes in three sizes, so a finished line of text runs 7", 10½", or 14" tall depending on how big and loud you want it to be!

Why I made it

I want you to be able to sew what you want to say.

But also - twenty-five years into a design and creative life - I keep landing on the same theme: wordplay. Quiltabet is that obsession distilled into something you can actually sew.

Who it's for

This one's beginner-friendly, technique-wise - if you can sew a half-square triangle and manage a nested seam, you're set.

If those are new skills, this is a genuinely good way to practice!

But 'beginner-friendly' doesn't mean small: with three sizes, and an entire alphabet's worth of decisions ahead of you, there's plenty of room to make this as ambitious as you like!

How to purchase the pattern

Quiltabet comes in three ways, depending on how much of the alphabet you're after:

  • Full bundle - everything, together, for less than buying the two separately
  • Just the letters - the complete alphabet of letters
  • Just the extras - numbers, punctuation, ligatures, and the heart block, for anyone building on letters they already have
I sincerely hope you are inspired by Quiltabet to sew what you want to say. And I'm excited to see your words! If you post about it, please tag me or use the hashtag #quiltabet.
